Many people say that hunting is just about killing an animal, but that isn't true and that is only a small part about hunting. Some things that make up hunting include camaraderie, quality time with others, making memories, and finally killing an animal to put it in the freezer to feed yourself, family and friends. Some of the hunting industry has made people think that hunting is only about killing animals, but the points written in this article will show you that is not true.
Hunting Camaraderie
Hunting camaraderie is different from any other camaraderie for me. What other thing can you do where you are able to spend a bunch of time trying to figure out how to accomplish something? Some people put tons of hours in together trying to get an animal. I know when we are at camp, I always love to hear each other's plans on where they’re going to hunt and what they are planning on filling their tag on. And then you get to sit back after the plan comes together and talk about how you filled your tag.
Quality Time with Others
Along with camaraderie you also get to spend quality time with friends and loved ones doing something you all enjoy. The longer trips driving hours upon hours, getting to our hunting spot, and being able to talk about what and where we will hunt means we get a lot of time together, too. You also have quality time when you all come in from the morning hunt, grab a bowl of soup from the fire and sit down to relax and talk about what you just experienced in the field. Then you figure out where each other are going to hunt for the evening. Then there is the quality time that you spend after a day of hunting, watching T.V. and talking. You can also have quality time with others if you take someone hunting. At that point, it wouldn't even matter if you get anything because you get to show and teach them things that day that they never would have learned if you hadn't taken them hunting.
Making Memories While Hunting
Unless you have experienced it, you might not understand the great memories there are to be made while hunting. There are so many memories that I have made from my 13 years of hunting. I hope to make many more over the years as I keep hunting. I have hunted since I was 6 years old and have made a ton of great memories with friends and family. You can make memories on every hunt that you are on, from waking up early in the morning and hitting the woods with dad, filling a tag and everything in between. I always love the little memories when hunting from Dad getting stuck in a briar patch to telling dumb jokes to Dad as we sit in a treestand. Even and maybe especially the difficulties that we have when on trips from the car breaking down to troubles with the RV make the trips memorable. Some of those difficulties may seem bad, but we can always look back at them and laugh. Like the one time when we were up in New York with the RV and Dad locked the keys in the car or the time when he left the lights on when we were at a rest stop and when we woke up the battery was dead. Some other great memories that can be had are seeing and traveling with other people. Being able to see something rare in the woods and talking about it years later is also a great thing about making memories in the woods. You can also make memories filling your tag, because you will always remember that moment when that buck stepped out and you nailed him. You can also make memories from when you missed your shot and that buck is now just a memory, because that was the only shot you’ll ever have. You can always make good and bad memories while hunting.
Filling the Freezer
One of the last things that hunting is about (and it is only a small part) is filling the freezer. Whether you fill the freezer with a turkey, doe, duck or buck, it's always an accomplishment. I can't tell you what it feels like to finally fill a tag and be able to show something for all the hard work that you have put in. The feeling of being able to put food on the table for your family and friends is indescribable. My dad’s friend’s wife can't eat beef, so everytime I get a deer I ask them if they would like some of the meat. And most of the time they accept with gratitude. It feels amazing to help others that may not be able to get out hunting, and provide them with food from your hunting experience.
In Conclusion
There is so much more to hunting that some people don't think about or consider. Many people only think about hunting as killing an animal, but there is so much more! Next time someone tells you that hunting is only about killing animals, tell them some of these things and help them understand that there is so much more that goes with hunting.
